Welcome to Healthcare At Every Size! This blog is designed to offer the opinion and insight of an obesity medicine specialist on all things related to obesity, weight loss medications, lifestyle modification, stigma and bias, healthcare, and insurance coverage or lack thereof. Whether you are a healthcare provider trying to figure out how to incorporate obesity medicine into your practice or a patient looking for an honest opinion on what's out there as far as treatment, this site can provide some feedback and guidance on the fast paced, constantly changing world of healthcare. There's a lot happening in the relatively new field of obesity medicine and I will try to cover new topics as they come up.
As a physician treating the disease of obesity in New Orleans, Louisiana, I have a lot of opinions about what works, what doesn't, and what needs to change to get us where we need to be. I am also acutely aware of the growing opposition to the characterization of obesity as a disease, hence healthcare at every size. In my high BMI clinic (60-100 or more), many patients are dying of the disease of obesity. But not everyone who meets the criteria for the diagnosis of obesity is sick and the decision of when and how to treat should be made by the patient and provider together. In my blog, I'm going to try to tackle the complicated topics of obesity stigma and bias in healthcare. I would encourage everyone to give feedback and ask for more on topics that are important to you and your journey to health.
